So in Levi's opinion, Sarah quit to pursue money. This is as close to the truth of the matter as we will probably get and it rings the most true. Though I've read the transcript, painful for anyone who enjoys the English language, and watched her statement through twice, excruciating as that was, it was obvious Palin was flinging everything she could to see what would stick. Over course nothing did because it was meant to be slippery and evasive while she threw darts at her favorite target, the media and few in the direction of her detractors.
However, the fly on the wall in the Palin household for a month, Levi gives us the inside skinny and for myself, I had an epiphany. Yes, it was prattled about following her resignation, that Palin could cash in and she has piles of legal bills so who would blame her, but Levi put a fine point on it. Of course she quit for the money. Palin has been interested in squeezing money from her position starting with being the mayor of Wasilla, to the governor's office and then as a Vice Presidential candidate.
For example, as mayor, she undertook the construction of a $14.7 million dollar sports complex, getting Wasilla residents to vote to increase their sales tax by half a percent to fund it. Of course it is coincidental this served to benefit her own children.
As governor, she charged the state a per diem when spending the night in her own home.
And famously, or infamously, as McCain's vice presidential running mate, her well documented raids of Neiman's and Saks that included clothing for her children and the "first dude".
Then it should have come as no surprise that Palin couldn't resist the allure of book deals or reality shows and the flood of cash that would pale in comparison to the governor's salary which requires real work.
I realize this has probably already been much discussed here, but since I'm still catching up on news and this is only a day old, it was irresistible.
One further opinion on Palin's resignation. Aside from the money, in quitting before her term was complete she let down the people of Alaska. They placed their trust in her and her leadership only to be abandoned, if we are to believe it, because she'd be a lame duck. Taking that asserition, ridiculous as it is, to its logical solution, the pitbull with lipstick turned into a poodle when the going got tough. This is the person who Republicans would have placed a heart beat away from the presidency. If she cannot stand up to or negotiate with the legislators of her own state, nevermind a mean old comedian, how could she have been expected to deal with Ahmajinedad, Putin, Medvedev or al-Queda? Once again, thank the powers that be the U.S. was spared the leadership of Sarah Palin.
