Noonan sez Palin makes GOP look stupid

JULY 10, 2009

A Farewell to Harms Palin was bad for the Republicans—and the republic.

· By PEGGY NOONAN

...In television interviews she was out of her depth in a shallow pool. She was limited in her ability to explain and defend her positions, and sometimes in knowing them. She couldn't say what she read because she didn't read anything. She was utterly unconcerned by all this and seemed in fact rather proud of it: It was evidence of her authenticity. She experienced criticism as both partisan and cruel because she could see no truth in any of it. She wasn't thoughtful enough to know she wasn't thoughtful enough. Her presentation up to the end has been scattered, illogical, manipulative and self-referential to the point of self-reverence. "I'm not wired that way," "I'm not a quitter," "I'm standing up for our values." I'm, I'm, I'm.

...In another age it might not have been terrible, but here and now it was actually rather horrifying.

...McCain-Palin lost. Mrs. Palin has now stepped down, but she continues to poll high among some members of the Republican base, some of whom have taken to telling themselves Palin myths.

..."The elites hate her." The elites made her. It was the elites of the party, the McCain campaign and the conservative media that picked her and pushed her. ...She is a complete elite confection. She might as well have been a bonbon.

..."She makes the Republican Party look inclusive." She makes the party look stupid, a party of the easily manipulated.

..."She shows our ingenuous interest in all classes." She shows your cynicism.

..."Now she can prepare herself for higher office by studying up, reading in, boning up on the issues." Mrs. Palin's supporters have been ordering her to spend the next two years reflecting and pondering. But she is a ponder-free zone. She can memorize the names of the presidents of Pakistan, but she is not going to be able to know how to think about Pakistan. Why do her supporters not see this? Maybe they think "not thoughtful" is a working-class trope!

...She hurts, as they say, the Republican brand, with her mess and her rhetorical jabberwocky and her careless causing of division. Really, she is the most careless sower of discord since George W. Bush, who fractured the party and the movement that made him.

Peggy redeems herself somewhat with the last one, but just barely. GW Bush is the epitome of dumb Republican, and look how the party supported him while he trashed the country. The GOP has been looking pretty friggin' stupid for quite some time now. It didn't start with Sarah Palin.

By the way, Levi Johnston has come out against Sarah as president, and that gotta count for somethin' right? Right? Well, maybe not.

Interesting...I guess he was just holding back earlier, when Peggy Noonan let Palin have it last year, and then relented and apologized. I bet she's regretting that apology now. Does Jack regret helpfully posting it?

There Is A Lot Of George W. Bush In Sarah Palin
by DallasNE

Before the 2000 election it was pointed out that Bush lacked gravitas. The basic response to that was "so what, Dick Cheney has the gravitas". But as the last 8 years showed, Bush never did acquire gravitas. Instead, Bush reverted to his gut instincts on everything. Well, guess what. That was a formula for disaster if there ever was one. Gut instinct is no substitute for basic intelligence (gravitas). Like Bush, gut instinct is about all Sarah Palin has to offer.

Peggy Noonan understands that and she wants no part of it. I can't believe the American people would fall for it a second time either. One dim bulb was more than enough.

What, you had sex with someone claiming to be Peggy Noonan and you fell for it?
I understand your disappointment
by ducadmo

I know you guys fell hard for this Palin lady and it turns out she's going to do the smart thing and cash in her chips. Personally, I don't blame her. Looking out for numero uno is the Republican creed.

Noonan makes the call, DOA, note the time.

So ....

How do you feel about Romney? Just curious. Meh. That's what I thought, too. Pawlenty? Couldn't even win in his home state. Boehner, now there's a man who isn't even trying to pass for white. There's you guy.

Deal with it.

One can only hope

that this drumbeat keeps a steady beat.

Considering
by Urquhart

that she has to put up with constant crap that no other governor in the nation does, solely because her opponents (such as Artie down there) are completely mental, I don't see that she had much choice.

She has now freed herself from the bear-pit they had constructed for her in Alaska. It'll be interesting to see what she does with all that time and money. I'm gonna go ahead and make a wild guess and say she does something in politics.

The last good call Margaret made was when she decided against putting an onion in her martini. Anyone who calls herself a Colin Powell Republican has no idea what wins elections.

I'm tagging this one Reporting for Booty. Or perhaps something else.
