I did expect him to try and clean it up as he is the one who picked her. He has that hanging over his own head and he is not a dumb politician. As goes Plain so goes he. I noted he also said:

Which shows that before he talked to her he was confused about that resignation speech as everyone else was. It has all been a little surreal.
